Words are unbelievably powerful.
They can spark ideas and motivation. They can inspire beliefs and inspiration. And if they are heard at the right time, in the right place, they can change your life forever.
Today I’m going to share with you four sentences that did just that for me; and my hope is that they do the same for you.
“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.” – Jim Rohn
For things to change for you, you must change.
It was Mr. Rohn who taught me this idea that if I worked on myself, my life would start to change for the better.
I was sold on this idea of “personal development” so I went to work on myself. And the harder I worked on myself, the better everything else got.
My income increased, my health increased, my happiness increased – life got measurably better every time I got better.
Take up the challenge to work harder on yourself than you do anything else and I guarantee your life will start to change.
“Expect more out of yourself than anyone else ever would.” – Tony Robbins
Our lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of our peer group.
That means, if you were to sum up the lives of the five people you spend the majority of your time with; their weight, their income, their most common emotions, thoughts, and ideas you would have a pretty accurate description of your own life.
To go one step further, we tend to act in ways that would be acceptable to this peer group – and this can lead to some pretty negative results in our lives. A friend might make a comment in passing, “you shouldn’t work so hard,” or “you don’t need to exercise every day,” or “you can cheat on your diet just this one time, come on you’re out with your friends!”
To take immediate control of your life, take control of your own expectations and hold yourself to higher standards than anyone else would ever expect.
“You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar
Every entrepreneur, business owner or manager, and sales person needs to understand this.
How do we provide enough value to other people that they give us value in return?
If you are a salesperson or business owner and you sell enough products and services that solve enough problems — you’ll get what you want.
If you are a manager and you can train and enthuse and inspire and motivate your organization to be more productive, then both of you will be rewarded because you have helped your people get what they want.
I’m no different. I want to make a positive impact on your life like my mentors have done for me. I know that as a speaker and coach I’ll get everything I want if I can just help you get what you want.
And I’ve got sense enough to know that if I don’t do a good job for you this time, I won’t be invited back into your life next time.
If you do what you’re supposed to do — if you deliver — then you’re going to be invited back and it doesn’t matter if you’re a school teacher, a doctor, dentist — if you do good today, you’ll be invited back tomorrow. If you give enough people what they want, they’ll give you everything you want.
“Knowing is not enough, we must APPLY. Willing is not enough, we must DO.” – Bruce Lee
A powerful enemy of greatness is hubris. I know someone isn’t into mastery when they say, “I know that already.”
Mastery is when you continue to practice what you know — after all, you are what you do, not what you say.
If you don’t consistently practice what you know in your health, your relationships, your finances, your emotions, and your learning — you’ll quickly find your life falls apart. We either grow or we die.
Knowledge may be the vehicle but action is the fuel. Take action and apply what you know – you’ll love the results.
Maybe today isn’t the right time or place for these words to make the dramatic impact on you like they did for me.
If that’s the case take these ideas and store them in the back of your mind for that rainy day when you need them.
Because if there’s anything guaranteed in this life it’s that we’ll all have a rainy day once in a while. And sometimes all it takes to turn it all around is a few positive words of encouragement.
What are some words that you’ve heard that made a positive impact on your life?
