Concentration & Focus Part 1

How do I focus?  How do I concentrate when all hell is breaking loose around me?

In a world where we are constantly bombarded with information and the speed of life is staggering, we, as a society, are forgetting how to focus.  Simple tasks are troublesome, bigger tasks are impossible.

Only a few short years ago the term “ADD” was not used very often.  Now, supposedly every child, teen, and adult in America has this challenge.  What happened?

It couldn’t be because technology is changing the way we interact with world so rapidly that it blows the mind.  Now instead of calling someone on the telephone, you can write them an e-mail, you can blog about your day, you can twitter, instant message, message, picture message, video message, and several other things straight from your phone!

Multitasking has become a part of our every day lives.  People are very proud to be a “multi-tasker”.  I am certainly one!  “Look how many things I can do at once!”  I’d say, not realizing that if I were to just do one thing, I would finish them all in half the time.

Why would we want to focus?  Well focus is like a laser beam.  The moment you start to focus on a certain task at hand it comes much closer to completion.  What do you have to do to solve a math problem?  More than likely you need to  compute it in your brain, or at least think of the process on your calculator.  Usually that math problem has your complete undivided attention, if even for a split second.

Today, you see many “get rich quick” schemes.  I’m sure all of them have some merit to them, and I bet that if you focused on one and only one, it would work eventually.  But the problem is, people jump from one to the next, to the next, to the next, and never really achieve the result of making money!

This goes for everything if you think about it; if you focused on one particular diet (besides the chocolate cake diet), I bet you would lose weight and keep it off.  If you focused on a workout program, you would get stronger.  And I have a hunch, if you focused on your business or career you would make money.

Unfortunately we have so many distractions that it is easy to take a different route.  We check facebook and myspace while at work, we rummage around for the scores of the week for our favorite sports teams.  We look at dumb videos of a cat playing piano instead of face the work we need to get done.

Here’s has worked, does work, and will continue to work:  Focus your energy into uninterrupted time.

This time does not always have to lengthy!  You would be surprised to find how much you can accomplish when you focus on a certain task!

3 Laws of Concentration

There are three laws of concentration.  As long as you do these three you can and will achieve more in less time:

  1. Focus your eyes. Your eyes are how to pick up information from the world.  Instead of looking around, keep your eyes focus on the task at hand.
  2. Focus your mind. When you are working on a task, keep your mind thinking about the task at hand.
  3. Focus your body. You cannot keep your mind focused if your body is not in a position to allow it to focus.  When you are slumped down it makes things very difficult to learn or process things.

There are several tricks to keeping your eyes, mind, and body focused.  We will discuss that in part 2 of this series…

Stay tuned!

Have a fantastic day!
